Firstly, we have strength in unity: In a small population, the number of people attending individual churches will be limited. When churches work together ecumenically, we can pool resources, share responsibilities, and provide a stronger, more united Christian witness. This collaborative approach amplifies our collective impact on our island's spiritual, social, and cultural life.
Secondly, in community building: In an island community, people often know each other well and rely on one another in times of need. Our ACT presence fosters a sense of shared purpose and connection among the different Christian denominations, reducing denominational divides and emphasizing what unites the Christian community. This helps build a spirit of cooperation and mutual support, which benefits us as an entire island.
Thirdly, we can more easily to address common challenges: Small communities often face shared challenges, such as isolation, limited access to resources, and an aging population. Churches that work together can more effectively address these issues, whether through joint outreach programs, shared social services, or collective advocacy for the community’s needs.
Fourthly, in creating a united public witness: A unified Christian voice is often more visible and impactful in the public sphere. Whether organising events, contributing to our many and varied public discussions, or addressing social and moral issues on the island, our ecumenical presence can make a spiritual influence more pronounced and relevant to the entire community, including those who may not be regular churchgoers.
Lastly, in fostering inclusivity: By working together, churches demonstrate a model of inclusivity, welcoming people from different denominational backgrounds. This ecumenical spirit encourages people to see the broader Christian message rather than focusing on denominational differences, making the Church more approachable to those exploring faith.
In summary, an ecumenical presence on Alderney promotes unity, strengthens community bonds, and amplifies the Church’s ability to serve and witness in a small, interconnected environment.
